Schumann’s Dichterliebe

The fourth installment of CROpera’s 2 nd Thursday Series will be a recital of Schumann’s Dichterliebe featuring tenor Chris Carr. This production will debut Thursday, December 10 at 7pm at youtube.com/cedarrapidsopera.org, and will be available after at cropera.org. The production was filmed at the historic Cedarmere estate in Roslyn Harbor, NY, which was the home of 19 th century American poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant.


Chris Carr grew up in Quasqueton (IA) and has been described as a “confident and energetic” performer with “warmth and beauty in his voice.”Carr was last seen as Beppe in CROpera’s 2017 production of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, and earlier as the Sacristan in Puccini’s Tosca. He is a two time District Winner in
the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and in 2015 made a successful professional transition from baritone to tenor repertoire. CROpera is incredibly pleased to have this opportunity to feature Mr. Carr once again in this showcase presentation of work from Schumann’s most prolific career

January 14 – An encore presentation of CROpera’s 2018 production of Puccini’s Turandot featuring soprano Rebecca Nash and tenor Ta’u Pupu’a.

February 11 – World premiere of Operatini, a series of songs on the theme of Zoom meeting anxieties by Nancy Hill Cobb and Melinda Boyd, featuring mezzo soprano Suzanne Hendrix-Case (who made her Metropolitan Opera debut in its 2019 production of Akhnaten). This marks CROpera’s 4 th commission in its 23 year history.

March 11 – Anna Young’s The Enchanted Forest, a children’s opera featuring CROpera Young Artists and Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre.

April 8 – Lecture/Discussion, The Last Gasp: Opera and Epidemics featuring Dr. Karen Wachsmuth and Emeritus Professor of Global Health Studies Dr. Christopher Squire discussing both the musical and scientific aspects of disease as portrayed in opera.
