The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) is excited to announce the tenth year of our Free Summer Admission Program! The CRMA will be free for all visitors
July 2 through September 1, thanks to our generous sponsors: Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, Transamerica, TrueNorth and UFG.
“Ten years ago, the board and staff of the CRMA came up with the idea to suspend admission for two months during the summer to allow all people, regardless of income, to access the Museum and its holdings. With the generous support of four corporate underwriters, admission was suspended for July and August and the CRMA is pleased to have been able—with our corporate partners—to continue this tradition for the past ten years. During our Free Summer program, we see many more people than usual, and people who might not otherwise visit the art museum. We are thrilled to welcome everyone during this time and equally happy that we have been able to do so for the past ten years,” says Executive Director Sean Ulmer.
This summer there are ten separate exhibitions to experience. Our two new current temporary exhibitions are: Kick Up Your Heels: The Fine Art of Shoes and Into the Blue: An All-Iowa Juried Exhibition. Kick Up Your Heels celebrates the not so humble shoe highlighting the unique design elements that make each shoe a distinct work of art. Into the Blue: An All-Iowa Juried Exhibition is a color-specific celebration of contemporary Iowa artists. Juried by CRMA Associate Curator Kate Kunau, Into the Blue draws work from artists all over the state of Iowa celebrating the hue in both two and three-dimensional works across all media.
Fun and exciting programming has been developed around both exhibitions! Those events can be found on our website at www.crma.org.
There are also eight other exhibitions currently on display: Art In Roman Life, Beyond the Prairie: Midwestern Art from the Collection, Grant Wood: From Farm Boy to American Icon, Marvin Cone: An American Vision, Mauricio Lasansky: Master Printmaker, Terra Nova: Ten Years, John Beckelman: Horizon Suite and Bruce Beasley: A New Direction.
We invite you to come to the CRMA often this summer to experience and explore all that these exhibitions and their programs have to offer! There is something for everyone to enjoy at the CRMA!
Additionally, admission is free at the Grant Wood Studio thanks to a grant from the Esther and Robert Armstrong Charitable Trust. Grant Wood comes to life in this light-filled, inspirational loft known as the Grant Wood Studio located right here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Wood lived and worked in the Studio from 1924 through 1935, but his spirit is still very much alive as visitors observe the decorative details and craftsmanship that went into transforming the loft into a studio, performance space, and living quarters. Visitors can stand in the very spot where Wood painted some of his most famous works, including American Gothic (1930). The Grant Wood Studio is open every weekend from noon to 4:00 PM with free docent guided tours.
The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from noon until 4:00 PM. Thursday from noon to 8:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM.
