Family Fun – Learn a Craft @ Ladd Library

Families, grandparents, kids, and caregivers come to the library to enjoy a free activity and share some quality time with your loved ones. All children should be accompanied by an adult.

Please register by calling the library or online at www.crlibrary.org on the events page.

Families can try out all or one of the crafts we will explore during today’s event. Get inspired by artists taking these crafts to a new level, and checkout the resources the library has to explore each craft at home. Please register ahead of time as space will be limited.

Thou Art @ Grand Re Opening

After a devastating fire 3 years ago on Main Street in Anamosa, Thou Art Gallery will host a Grand ReOpening on Saturday, April 4th from 10AM to 8PM. Music by Billy Lee Janey and Skeeter Lewis, Muddy Rutts and a Celtic Duo. Kids will be able to be creative in the kids classroom. Thou Art will showcase more than 25 artists from Eastern Iowa. It has been a long journey and a true labor of love for this historic old bank building! Please come celebrate with us!

Saturday mornings are for investigation! Elementary aged children and parents/guardians/ care-givers are invited to participate in a STEAM project that they will work on individually or with others.

Participants will be encouraged to share their findings or work with the group. We will also celebrate the scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and artists who inspired today’s project.

Each week will feature a new type of craft like pottery. Try the featured craft via an introductory project using the necessary tools. All ages are welcome.

Please register by calling the library or online at www.crlibrary.org on the events page.

Some of the crafts may be difficult for children younger than 12 because they use tools or techniques that may need adult assistance. If your child is younger than 12, we ask that a caregiver/older sibling (over the age of 12) attend to assist. For questions, please contact Jen at eilersj@crlibrary.org. Registration is suggested as supplies are limited. In order to complete the project, attendance is required for both dates for classes marked (*).

Saturday, March 14 – Metal Stamping: Use metal stamping tools to create one-of-a-kind key chains or bracelets.

Saturday, March 28 – Acrylic Paint Pouring: Learn the techniques to obtain these beautiful designs to hang on your own wall at home.

Friday, April 3 – Handmade Original Stamps: Try out using lino cutters to create unique designs you can use to stamp paper, cloth or other materials.

Saturday, April 11 – Macrame: Learn a handful of knots which will help you on your way to creating a beautiful, mini-plant hanger perfect for an air plant.

Friday, April 17* – Wood and Resin Casting Part 1: Learn how to match wood with colorful resins to create unique wall art.

Saturday, April 25* – Wood and Resin Casting Part 2: During this session we will polish and clean-up our resin works of art after they have cured

Friday, May 8 – Cut Paper Dioramas: Create a beautiful art piece by layering cut paper designs on top of one another.

Saturday, May 16 – Clay Molding and Stamping: Using air drying clay we’ll create beautiful molded pieces with everyday objects

Friday, May 22 – Tapestry Weaving: Get inspired to create interesting and modern tapestry using different materials.

Nature Explorers @ Cedar Rapids Downtown Library

Calling all nature explorers! Join us once a month as we explore nature through hands-on-projects and stories. Some activities will involve going outside, weather permitting.

Be sure to wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather we will be having as well as clothing that you can get messy in.

February: V-Day Activities: heart scavenger hunt and/or snowball fight, homemade pet toys for CVHS

March: Plants & Birds, grow a seed and/or make a bird feeder to take home

From crafts to games. Fun things to do after school.

March 26th: Choose to make wristbands in Super Hero colors, Princess colors or create your own design! Don’t forget to make one for a friend!

April 23rd: Spend some time folding and making origami – from boats to Superheroes. We will have a variety of origami books and ideas for beginners up to more experienced Origami folders.

May 28th: Time to play with Ozobots! Draw lines, create codes and find out what Ozobots can do.
