Unwrapped: Gifts from the Peter Norton Family Christmas Project, 1988-2018 @ Cedar Rapids Museum of Art
Dec 11 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Retired computer entrepreneur Peter Norton (Norton Antivirus Software) is a contemporary art collector as well as an active participant in various civic and philanthropic activities. In 1988, the Norton Family Christmas Project began commissioning artists to create original, multiple-edition works that were mailed as holiday greetings to friends, colleagues, and selected institutions.  In 2017, the CRMA received the bulk of these wonderful holiday greetings from Director Emeritus Terry Pitts and his wife Kathy Hall.

The objects and artists’ books that comprise the Project collection are incredibly varied. A sense of whimsy runs through many of the pieces: salt and pepper shakers become snow globes, a music box exhorts us to be silent.  Many works also have a sociopolitical focus, addressing issues as varied as slavery, AIDS, and gender identity.  Taken together, the Norton Family Christmas Project objects and artists’ books provide a wonderful snapshot of the last thirty years of activity in the art world at large, presenting the work of both emerging and more established artists.  The 2018 edition of the Norton Family Christmas Project was the last and ended the series.

Legends & Folklore of Winter with Chad Lewis @ Legends & Folklore of Winter with Chad Lewis
Dec 13 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

As Dickens wrote, the ghosts of Christmas are really the past, present and future, swirling around us in the dead of the year. They’re a reminder that we’re all haunted, all the time, by good ghosts and bad, and that they all have something to tell us. Winter may seem like a quiet time, but it is actually filled with bizarre tales and stories of cannibalistic spirits, Krampus the anti-Santa Claus, stories of little people, werewolves, witches, people being buried alive, and numerous other Holiday traditions for the darkest days of the year. Sip a cup of cocoa or cider and join us for chilling and mysterious folklore perfect for this time of year, sponsored in part by the Hiawatha Public Library.

For over two decades Chad Lewis has traveled the back roads of the world in search of the strange and unusual. From tracking Vampires in Transylvania and searching for the elusive monster of Loch Ness to trailing the dangerous Tata Duende through remote villages of Belize and searching for ghosts in Ireland’s castles, Chad has scoured the earth in search of the paranormal. Chad has been featured on the Discovery Channel’s A Haunting, William Shatner’s Weird or What, ABC’s World’s Scariest Places, Monsters and Mysteries in America, along with being a frequent contributor to Ripley’s Believe it or Not Radio. With a Master’s Degree in Psychology, Chad has authored over 20 books on the supernatural and extensively lectures on his fascinating findings.
