ICCA’s Annual Meeting, Celebration of the Arts, featured keynote speaker John Richard, an independent documentary filmmaker, video producer and photographer living in Iowa City, Iowa. For his keynote address at Celebration Of The Arts, Richard showed clips from the film, Saving Brinton, talked about the project, and what it is like to work as a film maker in the region.

ICCA’s Annual Awards were presented to local outstanding organizations and cultural advocates. The Collaboration Award recognized Old Creamery Theatre with Cedar Rapids Community School District, Coralville Center for the Performing Arts, Coralville Parks and Recreation Department, Starlighters II Theatre, Washington Community Theatre for collaborating together on Camp Creamery, a week-long workshop for children ages 7 and up who are interested in getting a hands-on theatre experience.

The Reaching Out Award recognized Summer of the Arts with Iowa City Pride for collaborating on multiple projects including a sponsored movie screenings, a joint play production, and joint fundraising events.

The Larry Eckholt Award, sponsored by Think Iowa City, was presented to Steve Semken of Ice Cube Press. The Peggy Whitworth Award was presented to Dennis Green of KCCK. These two annual awards recognize cultural advocates for their commitment to the Corridor’s arts and culture community.

ICCA’s Annual Meeting, Celebration of the Arts, will feature keynote speaker John Richard, an independent documentary filmmaker, video producer and photographer living in Iowa City, Iowa. He works on a variety of projects for clients including The Guardian, LA Times, New York Times, BBC around the world and has a background in photojournalism. Richard’s work combines a strong visual sense with intimacy and humor. His short films have won top prizes at festivals including the Nordic International Film Festival, Chicago International REEL Shorts Films Fest, Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival and Iowa City Documentary Film Festival.

The Position

Cedar Rapids Opera Theater is accepting applications for the position of Executive Director from strong leaders with broad practical experience in administration, fundraising and marketing. This is a full-time position, requiring residence in the Greater Cedar Rapids Corridor area. The Executive Director works closely with the Artistic Director on business planning to expand the companys reputation for artistic excellence, while maintaining its financial stability. The Executive Director will play a primary leadership role in achieving the companys vision.

The Company

Cedar Rapids Opera Theater just celebrated its 20thyear anniversary of presenting standard and contemporary repertoires, commissions and premiers. Founded in 1998 by Artistic Director and Conductor Daniel Kleinknecht, the company presents two to three operas each season, along with other opera-related events and programs. The company maintains an internationally recognized Young Artist Program that provides performance training and experience, as well as educational outreach opportunities. Cedar Rapids Opera Theater collaborates with other artistic and community organizations, and annually reaches between seven and ten thousand audience members and students.

Position Summary

This is a full-time position reporting to the Board of Directors. Primary responsibilities include:

Administration & Production Support

Assume overall responsibility for the companys strategic plan; daily operations and management; financial oversight; internal and external communications
Work closely with the Artistic Direct to plan future seasons, and maintain the companys calendar of activities, including productions, events and schedules
Negotiate dates and venue requirements for all events, and make necessary arrangements regarding equipment, set storage, and transportation consistent with the event budget
After the Artistic Director has hired performing artists and production staff, prepare the necessary contracts with artists, staff, and third-party vendors consistent with the event budget
Maintain the dexterity to anticipate, identify, and overcome obstacles
Recognize the multiple components of particular issues, the relationships between people, and the steps needed to achieve optimum solutions
Prioritize and complete necessary tasks to meet or exceed mutually agreed-upon expectations, and assume personal responsibility for leadership actions
Develop logical and orderly procedures, processes and systems to meet goals and objectives in an efficient and timely manner

Call for Iowa Artists: WINTER ARTS – 2019 Snow Sculpting Competition

January 23-26, 2019, Washington Park

The Dubuque Museum of Art, in partnership with the City of Dubuque’s Art in the Park initiative and Winterfun, Inc., announces a call for entries for the WINTER ARTS – 2019 Snow Sculpting Competition January 23-26, 2019 in Washington Park in Downtown Dubuque. Teams from the state of Iowa are invited to compete. All Iowa teams will be competing for the State of Iowa title and an invitation to the 2019 U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. In addition to the state competition there will be a community snow sculpting portion of the event that offers the public an opportunity to sculpt a block of snow. The competition will be held in conjunction with Iowa Winter Games occurring at Sundown Mountain Resort.

About Saving Brinton:

Years ago, local Iowa historian and eccentric collector Michael Zahs (from Washington, Iowa) chanced upon a cache of early films and cinema memorabilia belonging to Frank Brinton, a showman who brought moving pictures to America’s Heartland in the earliest years of the art form. Discovering that the collection includes rare treasures, including a lost Georges Melies short, Zahs sets out on a mission to restore and preserve not only this work, but the fascinating legacy of Brinton himself.

Saving Brinton is still screening across the country. It was an official documentary selection for Doc NYC, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and AFI Docs.

ICCA’s annual meeting, awards ceremony, and luncheon, Celebration of the Arts, will be held this year at South Slope Community Center, North Liberty, on Wednesday November 14. Tickets are now available.

Deadline Extended! Call for Nominations: 2018 ICCA Awards

The Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance will be hosting its annual meeting, Celebration of the Arts, on November 14, 2018, at South Slope Community Center. We are accepting nominations for the 2018 ICCA Awards from now until 5:00 PM, September 28, 2018. Please look back at your organization’s events from the past year and nominate the programs you are proud of most!

ICCA Partners may nominate themselves or another ICCA Partner for the Collaboration Award, which recognizes outstanding programming or cooperation between two or more ICCA Partners. The winners will be recognized at the annual meeting and receive the 2018 Collaboration Award.

ICCA Partners may nominate themselves and another non-ICCA organization for the Reaching Out Award, which recognizes outstanding programming or cooperation between an ICCA Partner and a non-ICCA organization or business. The winners will be recognized at the annual meeting and receive the 2018 Reaching Out Award.

All community members may nominate an individual to receive the 2018 Cultural Advocate Awards. The Larry Eckholt Award will honor one individual from the south end of the Corridor (Johnson, Cedar, Muscatine, Louisa, Washington, Iowa counties) and the Peggy Whitworth Award will honor one individual from north end of the Corridor (Linn, Jones, Delaware, Buchanan, Benton counties).

Sponsorships are still available for organizations and businesses who are interested in celebrating the Corridor’s arts and culture community.

Call for Applications: ICCA Board of Directors

The Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance is seeking several dedicated individuals to serve on ICCA’s Board of Directors. Board members must be able to commit to attending the monthly ICCA Board of Directors meeting (usually on the third Wednesday of the month at 4:00pm), be dedicated to improving the arts and culture community of the Corridor area, and be able to help promote, organize and attend ICCA programs throughout their two year term.

Board members need not be affiliated or employed by an ICCA Partner organization or business.

All applications will be reviewed by the ICCA Board and one or two will be invited to fill vacant positions and may begin their term as soon as October 17, 2018.

ICCA Announces Dawn Jones as Executive Membership Engagement Consultant

The Board of Directors of the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance (ICCA) is excited to announce the addition of a new staff member for the Alliance. Dawn Jones will serve as Executive Membership Engagement Consultant. Her duties will include responsibility for retaining current ICCA Partners, recruiting new ICCA Partners, and determining improvements to services provided to ICCA Partners.

“The board is excited about what this partnership means to our organization,” says Jamie Siefken, ICCA Board President, “Last year we updated our website, this year we are adding a consultant to focus on recruiting and retaining membership. Our opinion is, that we will add value and credibility to ICCA and strengthen our already vibrant arts and culture community within the corridor.”

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to collaborate with the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance to champion and expand member engagement,” says Dawn Jones, new Executive Membership Engagement Consultant, “Together we will strive to increase awareness regarding the essential role arts and culture holds throughout the region as a valuable contributor to the quality of life in the community.”

Dawn Jones comes to ICCA with a range of experience working with the arts and culture community. She is a lifetime advocate for arts and culture. Dawn has over twenty years’ experience in marketing and communications, was Manager of Iowa’s Creative Corridor, has served on the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance board for the past two years, and is a recent graduate of the Leadership for Five Seasons Class of 2018. She volunteers with several area Chamber of Commerce, the Cedar Rapids Entrepreneurial Program (C.R.E.P.) and serves on the SCORE Mentor executive board.
