The Position

Cedar Rapids Opera Theater is accepting applications for the position of Executive Director from strong leaders with broad practical experience in administration, fundraising and marketing. This is a full-time position, requiring residence in the Greater Cedar Rapids Corridor area. The Executive Director works closely with the Artistic Director on business planning to expand the companys reputation for artistic excellence, while maintaining its financial stability. The Executive Director will play a primary leadership role in achieving the companys vision.

The Company

Cedar Rapids Opera Theater just celebrated its 20thyear anniversary of presenting standard and contemporary repertoires, commissions and premiers. Founded in 1998 by Artistic Director and Conductor Daniel Kleinknecht, the company presents two to three operas each season, along with other opera-related events and programs. The company maintains an internationally recognized Young Artist Program that provides performance training and experience, as well as educational outreach opportunities. Cedar Rapids Opera Theater collaborates with other artistic and community organizations, and annually reaches between seven and ten thousand audience members and students.

Position Summary

This is a full-time position reporting to the Board of Directors. Primary responsibilities include:

Administration & Production Support

  • Assume overall responsibility for the companys strategic plan; daily operations and management; financial oversight; internal and external communications
  • Work closely with the Artistic Direct to plan future seasons, and maintain the companys calendar of activities, including productions, events and schedules
  • Negotiate dates and venue requirements for all events, and make necessary arrangements regarding equipment, set storage, and transportation consistent with the event budget
  • After the Artistic Director has hired performing artists and production staff, prepare the necessary contracts with artists, staff, and third-party vendors consistent with the event budget
  • Maintain the dexterity to anticipate, identify, and overcome obstacles
  • Recognize the multiple components of particular issues, the relationships between people, and the steps needed to achieve optimum solutions
  • Prioritize and complete necessary tasks to meet or exceed mutually agreed-upon expectations, and assume personal responsibility for leadership actions
  • Develop logical and orderly procedures, processes and systems to meet goals and objectives in an efficient and timely manner

Salary: $35,000.00 to $45,000.00 /year

January 23-26, 2019, Washington Park

The Dubuque Museum of Art, in partnership with the City of Dubuque’s Art in the Park initiative and Winterfun, Inc., announces a call for entries for the WINTER ARTS – 2019 Snow Sculpting Competition January 23-26, 2019 in Washington Park in Downtown Dubuque. Teams from the state of Iowa are invited to compete. All Iowa teams will be competing for the State of Iowa title and an invitation to the 2019 U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. In addition to the state competition there will be a community snow sculpting portion of the event that offers the public an opportunity to sculpt a block of snow. The competition will be held in conjunction with Iowa Winter Games occurring at Sundown Mountain Resort.

JOB SUMMARY
The part-time event coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing City and community events in Marion. He/she will facilitate placemaking initiatives in collaboration with Uptown Marion Main Street District, Marion Chamber, Marion Parks & Recreation and others at unique venues such as the Klopfenstein Amphitheater, Uptown Artway and other public spaces. Work involves a flexible schedule, limited supervision and the use of independent judgement in a fiscally responsible manner.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/WORK PERFORMED
•       Develop a long-term strategy for annual event planning and management in Marion
•       Create an estimated annual budget, including cost recovery, based on long-term event plan
•       Develop an event guide and associated standards for hosting and producing events in Marion
•       Identify funding sources to help offset costs for community events
•       Work at a grassroots level with businesses, individuals and community groups to assist with the development of new programs/events that complement existing offerings and engage diverse audiences
•       Create and maintain database of community events and contacts
•       Participate in the negotiation of event contracts and service agreements
•       Establish and oversee a community special events committee and coordinate the duties of event volunteers
•       Serve as the liaison for community events not organized by the City

Museum Educator

Overview

This full-time position (40 hours/week) reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Curator and Education Assistant to create and implement high-quality, mission-centered educational programming for all ages. The incumbent supervises a part-time Education Assistant. The Museum Educator collaborates with other museums, libraries, and educational institutions to partner and promote common educational offerings. Regular travel and evening/weekend work is required.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree in History, Education, or another relevant discipline is required, as well as experience in a formal or informal education setting. The ideal candidate should be creative, self-directed, organized, and a strong writer and presenter. The candidate should have an enthusiastic and outgoing personality, outstanding organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, the ability to relate history in an interesting manner, and an ability to accurately promote the AAMI’s programs. Strong computer skills and reliable transportation for statewide travel are required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, schedule, and implement tours, workshops, programs, and educational curriculum appropriate for varying audiences both on and off-site
  • Develop an understanding of Iowa’s African American history and African American Museum of Iowa policies
  • Maintain department and project budgets
  • Supervise part-time Education Assistant
  • Work with staff to develop a wide variety of mission-centered year-round programming
  • Coordinate and schedule outside presenters and speakers
  • Develop, conduct, and track program and tour attendance and evaluations
  • Communicate professionally and accurately with teachers, youth group leaders, tour groups, and other organizations
  • Recruit, train, and schedule Education Department volunteers and interns
  • Collaborate with other organizations to promote and/or implement events and programs
  • Build relationships with communities throughout Iowa
  • Compile and report information to the Executive Director and other appropriate persons
  • Review and update information related to the Education Department on the Museum’s website.
  • Assist with grant writing and other development activities as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Iowa City, IA, (Jan. 30, 2018) CALLING ALL ARTISTS— The application deadline for the 2018 Spring Art Exposé has been extended to Friday, February 23rd. All artists are encouraged to apply to this professional fine arts show. Featured mediums include painting, drawing, clay, woodworking, metal, jewelry, photography, fiber, mixed media and more. The Spring Art Exposé is an indoor exhibition held annually featuring the work of artists across Iowa, the Midwest, and beyond. This year, the show falls on April 21-22 from 10am—5pm on Saturday and 10am—4pm on Sunday located at the Iowa Memorial Union in Downtown Iowa City. Admission is FREE and open to the public and includes admission to the wine and craft beer tasting for all those 21 years of age and older.

The University of Iowa Fine Arts Council is a self-supporting, non-profit student organization that strives to support and promote local and regional artists within the Iowa City/Coralville area and beyond. Active since the 1970s, the council organizes two professional fine arts exhibitions throughout the year, the Spring Art Exposé in late April and the Holiday Thieves’ Market in December. Both shows offer the opportunity for individuals to become involved with the community while supporting local artists.

Summer of the Arts is excited to continue a collaborative project with Toyota of Iowa City to support and promote young, local, Johnson County artists. Creating a Legacy of Local Artists is a project aimed at supporting and encouraging emerging artists (age 18-22) to pursue a career in the arts by providing the opportunity for their first commissioned piece.

Applications are now being accepted for an opportunity to create an original piece of commissioned artwork that will be featured at the Iowa Arts Festival­­ June 1-3, then showcased at Toyota of Iowa City.  According to owner Mark Dreusicke, “Toyota of Iowa City and the Dreusicke family are pleased to again provide an opportunity for our young, local yet-to-be discovered artists.  By commissioning one of our neighbors to complete an original painting, we hope to showcase the artist’s creativity and talent to those inside and outside the community.  Toyota of Iowa City is proud to be a partner with the Summer of the Arts, and we look forward to seeing you during Arts Fest and the Friday Night Concert Series downtown! ”

Johnson County Iowa artists between the ages of 18-22 are eligible to apply. The application deadline is April 1, 2018. The selected artist will be notified by April 15, 2018, and receive a commission totaling $3,000 for their original work. The piece must be completed by May 152018.
