ICCA Names 2012 Larry Eckholt and Cultural Advocate Honorees
Posted: 11/1/2012

The Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance (ICCA) announced this year’s Larry Eckholt and Cultural Advocate honorees. The honors are given to community members who have exemplified passion, commitment, and advocacy to the cultural vitality of the Corridor. The awards will be presented at ICCA’s second annual Celebration of the Arts event on Monday, November 12, from 5-7 p.m. at the Coralville Center of the Performing Arts.

The recipient of the 2012 Larry Eckholt Award is Kent Smith. The Larry Eckholt Award is presented to a south corridor-area community member in tribute and celebration of Larry Eckholt's lifelong dedication to arts and culture. The award honors a community member who exemplifies the same passion, commitment and advocacy to the cultural vitality of the Corridor.

Smith, who was nominated by The Englert Theatre, has volunteered over 5,000 hours to the Englert, serving as the head usher for over 1,000 shows and ushering over 270,000 through the doors. His nomination noted: “Kent has a vast knowledge of the theater’s history that he shares openly and encourages patrons not only to buy tickets, but to become a "Friend of the Englert" by talking about his love for the Englert and its role as the cultural center of Iowa City.”

The recipient of the 2012 Cultural Advocate Award is Denny Redmond. The Cultural Advocate award is presented to a north corridor-area community member who best exemplifies passion, commitment and advocacy to the cultural vitality of the Corridor.

“Denny is a renaissance man whose passion for the arts and quality of life in our region has tirelessly improved the landscape of music for everyone ,” wrote nominator Robert Massey, Orchestra Iowa Executive Director. “Whether it is as a performing artist with countless jazz and classic rock ensembles, or as a leader in some of the region’s leading arts organizations, Denny has made it his life’s commitment to ensure that live performance continues to be a significant part of our cultural life.”

Celebration of the Arts is ICCA’s annual meeting event, intended to elevate awareness of the artistic and cultural organizations in the Corridor and to celebrate the outstanding collaborations of ICCA partners. All ICCA partners, business partners, friends, and community members are invited to attend. The evening will begin with a reception, and the program will feature performances honoring The Englert Theatre, Orchestra Iowa and Prairie Voices Productions , each celebrating a special milestone anniversary in 2012.

Arts organizations will be recognized for their collaborative efforts throughout the year by Collaborative and Reaching Out Awards. ICCA partner organizations nominate themselves for the two collaboration honors and the ICCA partnership votes on the ballot. The organization who receives the highest number of votes receives the honor and a Celebration of the Arts statue, crafted by local artist Tom Newport. The winners will be announced during the event.

Celebration of the Arts is open to the community. Admission is $15 at the door. To attend, please RSVP to Jessica Johnson at: Jessica@culturalcorridor.org or 319.849.8ART (8278).

Celebration of the Arts is sponsored by Alliant Energy. Additional support for the program is provided by Hills Bank and Trust Company and the University of Iowa Community Credit Union.

The Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance (www.culturalcorridor.org) is a network of over 150 cultural organizations in the Eastern Iowa Corridor. The mission of ICCA is to promote the varied cultural activities of its partner organizations and to nurture a sustainable cultural community. This is done through advocacy-focused events, educational programming, arts and culture awareness, cultural tourism, and building strong relationships throughout the community.
