Everyone is welcome to the Barn Dance! Fun
for all ages and abilities. No experience is
necessary as all dances are taught and called.
There’s no fancy footwork involved, you simply
walk through a series of movements that you’ll
learn quickly with help from the caller and
experienced dancers. Even if you don’t want
to dance, come enjoy the old time music,
provided by excellent local bands. The Barn
Dance is open to all: singles, couples, and the
entire family. Lessons available 7:30 PM; dance
starts at 8 PM.

American Ballet Theatre: Whipped Cream @ Hancher Auditorium

In this full-length story ballet—which will include a bevy of local dancers—a young boy overindulges at a Viennese pastry shop and falls into a delirious dream, filled with sugary heroes who come to his rescue. This dollop of delightful whimsy is a treat for the entire family and features alluringly sweet costumes and sets from the mind of pop surrealist visionary Mark Ryden. Choreographed by Alexei Ratmasky and featuring a score by Richard Strauss performed by Orchestra Iowa, “Whipped Cream” will satisfy your cravings for fun and fabulous dance.

Throughout the year, there will be opportunities for the local community to get a taste of this delicious show. Watch the Hancher website for updates as the season gets underway.

Movin’ at the Museum has expanded this year to once every month! Each first Saturday of the month will be another chance for folks to try out another style of physical activity from Zumba to POUND. This provides even more opportunity for everyone to get up and get movin’.

Zumba Gold is perfect for active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves you love at a lower intensity. Each class focuses on all elements of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility, and balance!

Our instructor for our Zumba workout will be Tara Allen!

Under the artistic direction of choreographer Ohad Naharin, Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company has built a global reputation for excellence. Employing Naharin’s movement language—known as “Gaga”—the company stands apart from other modern dance companies, offering a singular and arresting approach to choreography and individual movement. In its first Hancher appearance since 2006, Batsheva will perform “Venezuela,” a “work emblematic of Naharin’s curiosity and ongoing search for new challenges” (Haaretz).

Come to the English Country Dance and enjoy moving in smooth figures to gorgeous live music. Everyone who wants to dance is guaranteed a partner. Each dance is taught, and all ages are encouraged to participate. The dance form dates back to the 16th century. It appears in some movies portraying Queen Elizabeth I, as well as in film adaptations of Dickens and Jane Austen novels. Each dance has its own music. The tunes are hauntingly beautiful, ranging from old ballads, jigs, and reels to several immortalized in classical music and opera.
