Days of Disaster: The Douglas Starch Works Explosion

The History Center commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Douglas Starch Works Explosion, an event with repercussions for the entirety of Linn County – including the workers at the plant, local residents, business owners , and beyond.

The exhibit explores the disaster itself as well as the days immediately following. It’s a story of tragedy and resilience – and it’s a story of community coming together at a moment that could have sown division.

Grades 5-12: Rockets Unlimited with Absolute Science @ Coralville Public Library
Jun 20 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

How do rockets fly? And just how important are those nose cones and fins? Learn the answers to these questions and more at this high-flying workshop where you will build and launch your own stomp rocket.

This program is open to grades 5-12, and lasts approximately 1 hour.

Reading to Dogs @ Ladd Library
Jun 20 @ 6:30 pm – 7:15 pm

Make new furry friends as you improve your reading skills! Trained, certified therapy dogs provide comfortable companionship to emerging readers as they earn a free library book and bookmark. Everyone welcome to read to the dogs.Then stay as the pups perform at 7 p.m.! Presented in partnership with Therapy Dogs International.

Mother Goose on the Loose @ Ladd Library

“Mother Goose on the Loose” is a 20-minute nursery rhyme program for newborns to three-year-olds, followed by a 30-minute playtime. This program helps strengthen babies’ and toddlers’ foundation for literacy with rhymes, rhythm, repetition, story and movement.
