History on Tap: Behind the Beat @ WineStyles | Cedar Rapids | Iowa | United States

Sean Donaldson, from the African American Museum of Iowa, will take us from African beats to the jazz of the Harlem Renaissance to the popular music of the Civil Rights movement. The influences of traditional African music can be seen in the spirituals sung by African Americans while they worked as slaves, elements of spirituals can be found in blues, blue led way to jazz, jazz spurred on R&B, rock and roll, hip hop, and other forms of modern music. Each musical style has ties to history, such as jazz and the Harlem Renaissance or Motown and the Civil Rights Movement. To understand history, you just have to look Behind the Beat! WineStyles offers wine by the glass, 8 rotating craft beers on tap, and a small plates menu.

Cornell College Music Monday: Rod Pierson Big Band Featuring Craig Boche @ King Chapel
Oct 7 @ 7:30 pm

The Rod Pierson Big Band featuring Craig Boche offers the sound of today’s big bands, the biggest entertainers from the popular “Rat Pack” period, and classic instrumental big band hits. Nearly all of the band members of this eastern Iowa-based band are jazz educators and clinicians, and many are alumni of the orchestras of Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, as well as Woody Herman and Guy Lombardo. Rod Pierson’s credits include long-term stints with the Miller, Dorsey, and Guy Lombardo bands; backing artists such as Aretha Franklin, Burt Bacharach, and The Temptations; and touring with nearly 20 Broadway shows. Singer Craig Boche’s voice has been compared to Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Bobby Darin.
