Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don't Play Baseball

Thursday, August 17, 2017; 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Iowa City Public Library

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1947. It was one of the greatest stories of one person overcoming enormous adversity in American History. 70 years later there isn't a single woman on a Major League Baseball field as a coach, umpire, or player. Of the 30 MLB teams not one has a female General Manager.

A.J. Richard is the founder of Women Belong in Baseball Facebook group and host of the Attagirl: Women and Girls in Baseball podcast. A.J. will discuss the history of women in baseball, present obstacles, present success, and the future of women in baseball, and tell us about Baseball For All, a nonprofit organization that provides meaningful opportunities and instruction in baseball, especially for girls.
