  UIMA First Friday

Friday, March 3, 2017; 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
University of Iowa Museum of Art

Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception at FilmScene! UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend, enjoy the work of local artists, and mingle with other art-enthusiasts.

This month we are featuring John Martinek, whose art begins with a strong personal reaction to visual perception and observation. The symbolism of light, space, architectural structures, man-made objects, the human body, and nature make up the typical subjects in his work, and they are the things he loves to draw.

The common thread in his current work is based on compiling various image sources to create a larger single image using traditional techniques within drawing, printmaking, and painting. The most recent works are from a series loosely titled "Monumental Busts" or "Stress Fractures". Many of these images contain the presidential heads from Mount Rushmore re-contextualized to express political and ecological themes and explore the dynamics of the American obsession with oil, the relationship between nature and machines, and how unintended consequences can lead to self destruction.

John Martinek resides in Coralville, Iowa where he paints, draws, and makes prints in his studio. Apart from traveling and art making, his other interests include competitive cycling, carpentry, cooking, reading, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends. During the weekdays he works for McDonough Structures in Iowa City as a project manager and cabinetmaker. His partner Greta Songe teaches art at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, and his son Emmett is two years old.

John was born in Metairie, Louisiana in 1968, but grew up in Grinnell, Iowa before leaving to attend college. He received his BA in art from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois in 1990. In 1996 he received his MFA in Printmaking and Drawing from the University of Iowa.

First Fridays are free and open to the public with complimentary popcorn and a cash bar.

Consider becoming a UIMA member! Courtesies include home delivery of the UIMA Magazine and a personalized Membership Card, which entitles you to free entry to the Figge Art Museum and reciprocal admission to other art museums around the country.

First Fridays for the 2016-2017 season are generously sponsored by Robert & Karlen Fellows, H. Dee & Myrene Hoover, John & Patricia Koza, and John Menninger.
