Iowa Artisans Gallery

Highly-regarded Iowa artist Gordon Kellenberger is the focus of Iowa Artisans Gallery’s upcoming exhibition: New Works in Pastel, on view March 3 – April 16. The artist will be honored at an opening reception during the Downtown Iowa City Gallery Walk, March 3, 5-8pm, at 12 locations in downtown Iowa City. He will also demonstrate his painting techniques at that time.

Gordon Kellenberger is a full time painter working out of the Wasch Haus Studio in the Historic Amana Colony. A graduate of UNI, he is a former art teacher and founder of the Amana Arts Guild as well as the Iowa Pastel Society. In the early 1980’s he started the Art Iowa Workshops for artists and educators, which still continue today. Gordon is a past recipient of the Iowa Arts Council's Iowa Arts Award, which honors individuals for their commitment to excellence in the arts.

“Throughout the seasons, in the morning and late afternoon hours, I take delight in traveling and experiencing the country roads of Eastern Iowa in my Jeep. I look forward to seeing what is around the next corner and over the next hill. During these travels I find myself experiencing a new sense of light, color and pattern. This awareness has become the inspiration for my work.

Back in the studio my work begins by sketching a sound structure or composition. This composition helps me develop my focal point, patterns and sense of rhythm. Following this sketch I begin applying pastels. Now the work begins to become a series of contrasts: light against dark colors, warm against cool colors, sharp against soft edges, rough against smooth textures, organic against geometric shapes. These elements along with the immediacy and intensity of the medium make painting both challenging and enjoyable.

Finally, as I work I tend to simplify my subjects and infuse them with bright and fresh colors. The resulting intensity and richness convey both my delight in painting and my desire to express ‘something good about the Midwest.’ “

Founded in 1984, Iowa Artisans Gallery features the best in contemporary American craft and wall art from 200 regional and national artists. Daily hours are Monday-Friday 10-6pm; Saturday 10-5:30 and Sunday 12-4. For more information, please contact the Gallery at 319-351-8686.
