Red Cedar Chamber Music at National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library

Sunday, February 26, 2017; 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Red Cedar Chamber Music

Red Cedar Chamber Music continues its tradition of celebrating Eastern Iowa’s rich Czech heritage with Hussite Fantasy, a string quartet program which brings former Iowans Philip Wharton, violinist and composer and Karin Addis, violist, home to join Red Cedar’s directors, Miera Kim and Carey Bostian. The program features works by living composers Jerry Owen and Philip Wharton which are based on Czech folk music, as well as the great F minor quartet of Antonín Dvořák.

“Hussite Fantasy,” a work for string quartet by Philip Wharton, opens the program. The work was commissioned in 2008 by the Vavra family in memory of Frank, Lumir, Arnold, Olga, and Edwin Vavra to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the historically Czech First Presbyterian Church near Ely, Iowa. Based on an early 15th-century hymn tune attributed to John Zizka (1419), “Hussite Fantasy” includes a fantasy on the theme as well as two traditional Czech dances based on the theme (a Waltz and a Furiant).

“Concertant Over Czech Folk Songs” by Cedar Rapids composer Jerry Owen continues the program. The work was commissioned in 2002 by Red Cedar Chamber Music as a trio for flute, viola and guitar. Owen adapted the work for string quartet in 2016 for Red Cedar. Six Czech or Slovak folk melodies from a collection by Alma Turachek were used as the basis for four movements of varying color.

Performances of the Hussite Fantasy program will culminate in February with MainStage events, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 25 at First Presbyterian Church, 2701 Rochester Ave., Iowa City, IA and 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 26 at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, 1400 Inspiration Place SW, Cedar Rapids, IA.
